Taiwan students’ ASFV device wins silver at international competition

A team of students from National Chung Cheng University won a silver medal for developing a fast screening device that detects the African swine fever virus (ASFV) at the International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) in the United States earlier this month, the school said Thursday.

The Council of Agriculture (COA) notes that African swine fever (ASF) has continued to spread in European, Asian, and African countries. In the Asian region, already 10 countries have been infected since the outbreak of ASF in mainland China in August of 2018. Since the ASF epidemic struck Vietnam in February of this year, it has spread to 53 provinces, and 5.6 million pigs have been culled.

MOFA launches co-produced TV shows with broadcasters from New Southbound Policy target countries

As part of the government’s creative and people-oriented approach to the New Southbound Policy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has collaborated with four popular broadcasters from India, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam, respectively, to produce prime time TV shows showcasing Taiwan. Presented in local languages and made entirely on location by the channels’ in-house production teams, the programs are hosted by famous faces and tailored to the tastes of their respective audiences.
